Sweet Taste in Mouth

The change of taste in the mouth is known as dysgeusia.This can be brought about by quite a number of causes. The constant feeling of sweetness in the mouths even if you avoid eating sweet things it is not a normal occurrence. The sweet taste can be due to improper functioning of a person’s body.

The sweet elements that naturally cause sweet taste in the mouth include sweets, ice cream, chocolate and even sugarcane. . If your mouth is feeling sweet and yet you have eaten nothing sweet and the feeling does not end, you need to find out the exact reason that makes this occur; it can either be a serious one or one that can easily be treated.

Some of the causes of sweet taste can be due to certain diseases which include diabetes, neurological problems, and certain types of body infection, GERD or even neurological problems.

Diabetes

This disease is due to the body not producing enough insulin or there being excessive glucose intake which causes blood sugar levels to spike. This affects the composition of saliva. Some of the other signs that can occur are increased appetite of a person, thirst and also increased urination frequency.

A person’s neurological functions can be very much affected due to diabetes although these are late stages signs. Diabetes makes the saliva become sweet tasting. It is quite a life altering disease because it creates a metabolic disorder which requires a person to be closely monitored and also change their entire lifestyle.

Neurological problems

The sweet taste can be due to improper neural transmission from the mouth to brain which can be as a result of various medical conditions which include Alzheimer’s or even Parkinson’s disease. A brain tumor can lead to sweet tasting. These conditions require immediate medical consultation. Some of the other signs that can occur under this umbrella are loss of memory, speech alteration and even lack of clear vision.

Gastroesophageal reflux disorder [GERD]

This leads to acidic imbalance which affects the stomach thus making one have recurrent reflux to the mouth, consequently creating sweet taste in the mouth. This can be accompanied by someone frequently throwing up, experiencing difficulties in having to eat some types of food and persistent feeling of presence of something at the throat.

Body infection

The infection can either be of viral or of bacterial origin. A viral infection has the ability of directly affecting the nerves and theimmunity of the person. Viruses that we are exposed to have the ability to create sweet sensations in the mouth although many of the viruses in the body remain in an inactive state until they are triggered by the right conditions created in the body which allows them to become active. Mostly this condition involves a person’s reduced immunity.

Bacterial origin infection can affect a person’s sinuses. A person’s blocked sinuses can lead to sweet sensation in the mouth. There are other signs associated with sinuses septicity which includes the alteration in a person’s voice and also increase in the mucus production.

Indigestion

People that have acid reflux issues will have sweet sensation in their mouth quite often. Acidity is formulated therefore pushing the acid into the food pipe. It is just a feeling which is supposed to go fade away after sometime. Especially after the reflux takes place. If it continues for a long period without fading away in time one should immediately take action and not ignores as the condition becomes worse.

Nerve infection

If the nerves that are concerned with communication to the brain on taste matters are not functioning properly, this can cause one to experience sweet taste or even metallic taste in the mouth. These are mostly due to viruses that affect the nerves therefore unsettling the electrical impulses.

Treatment

A person’s sweet sensation may be an early sign of a serious medical condition. If the taste continues for a while or even gets worse one should immediately go see a doctor ; he or she may ask for some tests to be conducted to get to the root cause of the problem.

It is advisable either to visit an ear, nose or neurologist specialist.it will be easier for them to establish the actual underlying cause of this symptom.
